You must secure a cosigner who lives in the US and has valid legal status or permission, such as a US Citizen, Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card Holder), Visa Holder, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Recipient, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Recipient, etc. They will serve as the financial backup for the loan and would be responsible for payments if you or your payor become unable to make them.
Start having conversations with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or employers right away to ask if they would be willing to be your cosigner. This may be an easier conversation to have than asking them outright to loan you money for your case.
FYI: Your cosigner will need to provide proof of legal status and 2 forms of valid government-issued IDs. Â
